Two days after the call, Roger Vance pushed into the emergency boardroom already demanding to know who had authorized the changes. He crossed two steps, lifted his eyes toward the far end of the table, and stopped. I was in the chair he had assumed belonged to someone else.

For a few seconds, Roger simply stared at me.

He knew my face, of course. I was Baldric, Arianne’s father. The retired mechanic. The man with the battered pickup. The man whose hands still carried the kind of grease that never completely disappears from the cracks around your fingernails.
