The woman who stole my husband forty years ago sits at my bingo table every Tuesday. She is blind now, and I am the volunteer who reads her cards. She does not know who I am.

The first time she called me her angel, she said, “God sent you to me, honey.”

I said, “He certainly sent somebody.”

Then I daubed B-9 on her card and let her win. That night, I sat for a long hour in my dark garage before I could make myself go inside.

I moved back to this town three winters ago, after my second husband passed. A widow needs Tuesdays. That may sound foolish, but an empty week can spread until every day feels like the same day, so I signed up at St. Rita’s bingo to help at the low-vision table.

A volunteer there reads the called numbers and daubs the cards for players whose eyes have gone. The coordinator handed me a large-print card on my first evening.

“Table six, honey,” she said. “Her name is Delores. Macular. Sweet as pie.”

“Delores?”

“Right over there. She’ll talk your ear off once she knows you.”

I knew before I saw her. Then I looked across the hall and found her sitting small and powdered, holding her purse on her lap like a cat. Forty years fell on me at once, right there in a church hall that smelled like coffee and daubers.

I did not switch tables. I want that written down. I walked over, pulled out the chair beside her and said good evening. My voice did not shake, and we played bingo.

The first Tuesday, she turned her face toward me and asked, “What should I call you?”

“June,” I heard myself say.

It is my middle name. It was not exactly a lie, and it was not exactly the truth, which fit our history perfectly.

“June,” she repeated. “That’s pretty. You’ll tell me if I miss anything?”

“I won’t let you miss a number.”

Women like Delores never really look at the wife. Forty years ago, I had been a coat in a doorway to her, something in the way of the life she wanted. Now she could not look at anyone. Every Tuesday, the woman who took my Ray held my hand for luck during the four corners game, called me her angel and offered me butterscotch candies from the purse she guarded like a bank.

I learned about her life after mine in pieces. You might think it had been a prize. It was not. Ray left her too, inside two years. They had no children. She had a nephew in Ohio who called on Christmas, and the rest of her week was mostly spent in a kitchen chair by a window she could no longer see through, waiting for Tuesday.

She told me those things gradually, the way lonely people do when someone keeps coming back.

One evening she said, “You married, June?”

“Twice. I’m widowed now.”

“I’m sorry. Was the second one good to you?”

I hesitated over my dauber. “Yes. He was.”

She gave a small nod. “Then I’m glad you had him.”

I nearly asked whether she had ever been glad she had Ray. Instead, I read the next number.

My own heart did arithmetic it had never asked to do. Some Tuesdays I drove home crying and could not have said who the tears were for.

Ray, perhaps. My younger self. Delores. My second husband, who had loved the woman I became after another man broke her.

My daughter noticed that I always came home tired after bingo. Once she asked why I kept going.

“The parish needs volunteers,” I told her.

“They must have other volunteers.”

“They do.”

“Then why does it have to be you?”

I folded the sweater I had been holding and admitted, “I don’t know how to explain it yet.”

That answer was closer to the truth. The sentence I would be nervous to post, even now, is this: part of me kept going because I wanted to watch Delores suffer. I wanted proof that taking Ray had not made her happy. Then she would reach for my hand because she could not find her card, and I would hate myself for wanting anything from her suffering.

Last Tuesday, the hall was loud, and we were between games when Delores went quiet in a way I had not felt from her before. She took my hand, not for luck.

Her thumb moved over my knuckles. The caller tested the microphone, and the sound snapped through the hall.

I could hear chairs moving around us. “What is the thing?”

She lowered her voice. “The letter.”

I did not move. “The letter,” I repeated.

“He wrote to his wife after he came to me. He wanted to go home, June. He sat at my table and wrote it and cried on it, and he mailed it. I watched him mail it.”

My fingers had gone stiff under hers.

“The next morning,” she continued, “I parked by her mailbox and took it out. I kept it. She never answered because she never got it. He waited by the phone for two weeks. Then he stopped waiting.”

She drew a rough breath. “People think a marriage ends in a courtroom. It can end in a mailbox.”

The caller announced the next game. Nobody at our table daubed a thing.

For forty years, I had carried one story about my life: Ray left. Ray never looked back. Everything I built afterward stood on that certainty. Now a blind woman at a bingo table had removed it with a few sentences, and she did not know whose hand she was holding while she did it.

“You kept it,” I said. My voice came out level. I still do not know how.

“I couldn’t burn it. I tried twice.”

She pulled her purse closer and worked open the clasp with her crooked fingers. From inside, she took an envelope soft as cloth from handling, closed with a strip of tape yellowed with age.

“I carry it now, since my eyes went,” she said. “I read it once in forty years, standing at my stove. I’ve had it by heart ever since.”

She held it toward me.

“Read it to me, June. I know every word, but I’ve only heard it in my own voice, and my voice is the one that stole it. I want to hear it in a kind voice one time before I die.”

I looked down at the name on the front of the envelope, written in handwriting I had not seen since my kitchen had yellow curtains.

My name. My old name.

I slid my finger under the tape and unfolded forty years. Then, in the steadiest voice of my life, I began to read my own letter aloud to the woman who had stolen it.

“Dear…”

My voice caught on the name. Delores tilted her head, listening.

Ray had written that leaving had been a terrible mistake. He said he had been ashamed to call and did not know whether I would speak to him, but he wanted to come home if I would let him. He did not excuse what he had done. He asked for a chance to apologize to me face to face.

It was not a beautiful letter. Ray had never been good with words. Some lines wandered, and one sentence had been crossed out so heavily I could not read what had been underneath. That made it worse somehow. It was plainly him, uncertain and ashamed, trying to ask whether the door was completely closed.

When I reached the end, I read his name and lowered the paper.

Delores was crying without making a sound.

“Again,” she whispered.

“No.”

She flinched. “Please.”

“My name isn’t June.”

Her face stayed turned toward mine. For a second she seemed not to understand, and then her hand slipped away from me.

I told her my first name. I told her the old last name on the envelope had once been mine because Ray had been my husband.

“No,” she said.

“Yes.”

“You can’t be.”

“I recognized you the first night.”

She pressed both hands against her purse. “All these Tuesdays?”

“All of them.”

The room carried on around us. Numbers were called. Daubers struck paper. At table six, neither of us played.

“Why didn’t you say something?” she asked.

“At first, I wanted to know what became of you. After that, I wasn’t sure.”

“You let me call you an angel.”

“I let you call me June.”

Her mouth tightened, and for one sharp second I saw the younger woman in her, not because she looked young, but because she seemed ready to defend herself. Then it passed.

“I stole your answer,” she said.

“You stole my chance to give one.”

That was the difference, and I needed her to hear it. I could not say I would have taken Ray back. I had been hurt and furious, and by then I had started learning how to live without him. Perhaps I would have refused. Perhaps I would have agreed to meet him. The letter did not give me a lost happy ending. It gave me a decision I should have been allowed to make.

Delores bent over the closed purse. “I was afraid he’d leave me.”

“He did leave you.”

“I know.”

“And taking this changed nothing except what I believed about myself.”

She nodded once. “I know that too.”

I wanted to tell her she did not know. She could not know what it had been like to wait for a call that never came, then force myself to stop waiting. She could not know how carefully I had packed away every good memory of Ray because I thought none of it had meant enough for him to turn back.

But she did know something about waiting. She had spent forty years carrying the proof of what she had done, and she had spent most of her week alone. That did not settle the debt. It simply made her a person instead of the shape I had blamed in my head.

“Can you forgive me?” she asked.

I looked at Ray’s letter between my hands. “Not because you ask me at a bingo table. Not tonight.”

“I understand.”

“No, Delores. I don’t think either of us understands yet.”

The coordinator came over and asked whether we needed help. I said we were finished for the evening. Delores did not object.

I put the letter in my own purse. She heard the clasp close.

“It belongs to you,” she said.

“It always did.”

At home, I called my daughter and told her the answer I had not been able to explain before. I told her who Delores was, what she had confessed and what Ray had written.

“Are you all right?” she asked.

“No,” I said. “But I know something tonight that I didn’t know this morning.”

“Do you wish you’d gotten the letter then?”

“I wish I’d had the choice. That isn’t the same as wishing for a different life.”

My second husband was not a consolation prize, and my daughter was not part of a life I would trade away to test what Ray and I might have repaired. The letter changed the past I remembered. It did not make me want to erase everything that came after it.

This Tuesday, I returned to St. Rita’s. Delores was already at table six, her purse on her lap. There was an empty chair beside her, but I stood for a moment before taking it.

“June?” she asked.

I gave her my real first name.

She swallowed. “I didn’t know if you’d come.”

“Neither did I.”

I sat down and placed her bingo card between us.

“I can’t tell you I forgive you,” I said. “I can tell you I won’t lie about who I am anymore.”

“That’s more than I deserve.”

“Don’t decide what I give you. You did that once already.”

She nodded and folded her hands in her lap. When the first number was called, I read it to her and put the dauber into her hand. I guided it to the right square, but I made her press it herself.

I did not let her win. I did not punish her by making her lose. We played the card exactly as it came, with my real name between us and Ray’s letter where it had belonged all along, in my keeping.
