My mother died eight years ago, and for the first three, my father wouldn’t so much as look at another woman.

I found an empty spot on the wall and I hung the clean copy right next to the ruined one. The scratched face and the laughing face, side by side.

And I left them both there.

Because some things shouldn’t be erased just because they hurt someone once. My mother’s fear was real. Her love was real. Her mistake was real, too, and it cost the people she loved most eight years they’ll never get back. All of that was true at the same time, and scratching it out didn’t make it less true.

But it also shouldn’t be the only version left hanging on the wall. The frightened one, the clawed-away one, the last thing a dying woman did in a moment of terror—that couldn’t be the whole story. Not anymore.

So now there are two pictures on that wall. The one where she erased her friend, and the one where all three of them are simply young and laughing and together, before any of them knew what was coming.

Both of them true. Both of them staying.
