She said: you always make it work.

I said: yes. But Mom.

She said: yes?

I said: the next time I build something. The next time I make something that is mine. I need to know it’s mine.

She said: yes.

She said: it will be.

She said: I promise.

I held that.

It was not everything.

It was not the conversation where thirty years of family dynamics suddenly resolved into clarity and fairness and mutual understanding.

It was a mother saying I promise, with the specific weight of someone who had heard herself say something terrible outside a pantry door and who was trying, slowly and imperfectly, to become the person who would not say it again.

That was enough for now.

The mountains were out.
