She explicitly cautioned against accusing anyone without evidence. She asked that any unexpected death receive an independent examination before funeral arrangements proceeded.

Her condition had worsened abruptly three days before Adrian’s trip, despite earlier expectations that she had months left. Graham and I immediately recognized the need to contact the hospital.

Before we could do so, a woman named Megan called. She worked at Adrian’s company and said he had ordered the finance director to delete six years of records.

Dated six months earlier, it outlined a sequence of asset transfers, liquidation, movement of retirement reserves, foreign residency, and divorce. Millions in fraudulent corporate obligations were to be assigned to me before Adrian left the country with Victoria.

At the bottom was a separate stage concerning Beatrice, marked as something to be resolved before departure.

None of us could explain it with certainty. But alongside the financial records and her warning, it was evidence we could not ignore.

Adrian sent a photograph of himself and Victoria at an airport. He was returning, and his accompanying messages demanded a conversation before I made what he called an irreversible mistake.

Graham went pale.
