At Christmas, I Dropped My 8-Year-Old Daughter and 3-Year-Old

During Christmas, I decided to drop my 8-year-old daughter with her three-year-old sister at my parents house and said, “You guys head inside. I have to check on your dad in hospital.” But my parents turned them away. Then they slammed the door in their faces. My daughter had to walk home with her tiny sister in the freezing cold while carrying her, but not having any idea of the area. My three-year-old from exhaustion and cold. My 8-year-old tried to carry her but eventually l0st consciousness too…

I didn’t know any of that while I was sitting beside my husband’s hospital bed.

I thought my girls were warm. I thought they were eating Christmas snacks at Grandma and Grandpa’s. I thought the hardest part of my night was watching my husband sleep under a thin hospital blanket while machines hummed beside him.

Then my phone rang.

The man on the other end told me two little girls had been found outside in the cold. One was carrying the other. Both needed help.

I couldn’t make the words fit together until he told me the older girl had given them my phone number.

My number.

My daughter had remembered it while trying to get her baby sister home.

I ran.

By the time I reached them, my three-year-old was being warmed and monitored while my eight-year-old lay under blankets nearby. Her cheeks were bright from the cold, and her hands shook when she finally opened her eyes.

She didn’t ask for a toy. She didn’t ask about Christmas.

She asked, “Is Daddy okay?”

That nearly broke me.

Then she whispered, “Grandma wouldn’t let us stay.”

I sat beside her and asked her to tell me exactly what happened.

She said they walked to the front door like I told them. She knocked. My mother opened it, looked at both girls, and told them I should have asked first.

My daughter said she tried to explain that their dad was in the hospital.

She tried again.

She tried to keep the door open.

She tried to tell Grandma they didn’t know how to get home.

But the door shut anyway.

My eight-year-old waited on the porch for a while because she believed somebody would change their mind. When nobody came back out, she took her sister’s hand and started walking.

When the three-year-old couldn’t keep going, my older daughter carried her.

She carried her until she couldn’t.

My husband was awake when I returned to his room. One look at my face and he knew something had happened.

“Where are the girls?”

I told him.

He stared at me, then reached for my phone.

“Call your parents.”

My father answered first.

I didn’t yell. I asked one question.

“Did you know the girls were walking away from your house alone?”

He hesitated.

Then he said, “I saw them go down the driveway.”

My stomach turned.

He started explaining that my mother was angry because I had arrived without calling first. He said she believed I had taken their help for granted before and wanted to “make a point.”

I looked through the hospital-room doorway toward the hall where my daughters were being cared for.

“You watched an eight-year-old walk away carrying a three-year-old?”

My father said my name quietly.

Then, in the background, my mother snapped, “Give me that.”

A second later, my father handed her the phone.
