My father’s wife met me at the door of the funeral home and told me the service was “for family.”

Sweetheart. She’d sent my Christmas presents back because it was easier, and now, when she needed my signature, I was sweetheart.

“Bonnie,” I said. “Can I ask you something? Why wasn’t I on the list at the funeral home this morning? Why did the assistant walk me to my car?”
