The Unexpected Voice Suddenly Crackling Through the Cockpit Speakers

The first thing Toby pulled from the envelope was a photograph.

Not a recent one.

The edges were worn, and the colors had that slightly faded look old prints get after years of being handled.

In the picture, Brandon looked impossibly young.

He was standing beside a small training plane, thinner than the man I knew, wearing a nervous smile and holding up a pair of metal pilot wings.

Beside him stood an older man with one hand resting on Brandon’s shoulder.

Toby stared at it.

“Who’s that?”

Before I could answer, something small slid from behind the photograph and landed in Toby’s palm.

At first, I thought it was unfair.

Then I looked at Toby asleep against the window thirty minutes later, one hand closed around those old wings.

When we landed in Minneapolis, Toby woke before the wheels had fully stopped rumbling.

“Do I get to see Dad?”

“I think he knows better than to escape now.”

That finally earned a grin.

We waited until most of the passengers had left.

The older man from the photograph passed our row on his way out.

He stopped when he noticed what Toby was holding.

For a second, he simply stared at the wings.

Then he looked at me.

“You must be Brandon’s family.”

I nodded.

Toby immediately held up the pin.

“Dad said you gave him these.”

The man smiled, but his eyes turned glassy.

“I did.”

“Why?”

He looked toward the cockpit.

“Because your dad needed something to carry until he remembered where he was going.”

That was all he said.

No grand explanation.

He squeezed Toby lightly on the shoulder and continued toward the door.

A minute later, Brandon appeared.

Toby stood so fast that the drawing fell to the floor.

Brandon smiled and opened his arms.

For the first time that day, Toby didn’t immediately run into them.

“You knew we were here.”

“I know.”

He didn’t explain that the announcement had already been planned.

He didn’t tell Toby he was being too sensitive.

He simply apologized.

Toby looked at the page in his hands.

“Were you bad at flying?”

Brandon laughed.

“No.”

“Were you scared?”

That took longer.

“Yeah.”

Toby appeared genuinely shocked.

His father, in Toby’s mind, did not get scared.

Brandon sat on the edge of the empty seat across from us.

“I was scared I wasn’t good enough. And after my dad died, I was scared none of it mattered anymore.”

That was the first time I heard him say it plainly.

Not through an airplane speaker.

I sat beside Toby and asked the question that had been bothering me since the announcement.

Brandon stared at the floor for a moment.

Brandon looked at me.

“You’re right.”

There was no dramatic fight afterward.

The perfect surprise he thought he had created for his old instructor had also hurt his son.

He had to sit with that.

He had to answer Toby’s questions.

And on the return home, he spent nearly an hour telling us the pieces he had kept locked away for years.

The cheap food.

The first time Brandon finally believed he might actually make a living in the cockpit.

By the time we reached home that evening, Toby no longer thought pilots were fearless.

I think he admired his father more because of it.
