As my due date approached, I kept telling myself my husband would step up before our daughter arrived. Then one exhausting afternoon showed me how much I’d been carrying on my own.
Screws. There were so many screws. They were tiny, silver, and scattered around my swollen ankles like some cruel confetti welcoming me to motherhood. Just looking at the pieces made my back hurt.
