I waited until noon to speak to Chloe alone.

The house was still thick with the remnants of celebration—crumpled napkins, half-empty wine bottles, and the lingering scent of roasted chicken and cinnamon cake. Guests had begun to trickle out by ten, but my parents insisted we stay the night. “It’s tradition,” my mother had said, pressing a fresh set of sheets into my hands. “Newlyweds sleep under the family roof their first night.”

Now, standing in the backyard near the old apple tree where I’d proposed two years earlier, I felt anything but traditional. I felt hollowed out.

“Did you go into Dad’s room last night?” I asked, voice low, careful not to let it carry to the kitchen window.

Chloe flinched. She was wearing the same cream-colored dress she’d worn at the ceremony, now slightly wrinkled from sleep. Her hair was pulled back in a loose bun, strands escaping around her temples.

“Brandon, why would you even ask that?” Her voice was too quick, too bright.

All dated within the past six months.

All suspicious.

Then I found the note.

Tucked inside his old tool ledger, in my mother’s handwriting:

“Walter—If you bring shame into this house again, I will leave. And I will take everything with me.”

Dated three weeks before our wedding.

My breath caught.

This wasn’t a one-time mistake.

It was a small bungalow with peeling paint and a rusted mailbox. A woman in her fifties answered the door—dark hair, sharp eyes, wearing a housecoat.

On the drive home, I called my uncle Patrick.

“I know about the other woman,” I said.

She went very still.

I didn’t stop her.

“You knew… and you stayed?”

“For the house. For you. For the appearance.” Her voice cracked. “But no more.”

The next morning, she served my father breakfast as usual—scrambled eggs, toast, black coffee.

Then she handed him a folded letter.

“I’m filing for legal separation,” she said calmly. “And I’m selling the rental equipment. My half goes to me.”

My father turned white.

She walked out, head high, for the first time in decades.

That afternoon, my father showed up at my apartment.
