I was standing in my kitchen when the phone call came. I almost didn’t answer it. I had spent the last few weeks ignoring anything connected to her name. After the funeral I had convinced myself that silence was the only way to protect my heart.
But the woman on the other end of the phone sounded nervous.
“Are you the sister of Elena?” she asked.
I froze.
No one called her by her name anymore around me. To everyone else, she was gone. To me, she had disappeared the day I opened that bedroom door fifteen years ago and saw the two people I trusted most betraying me.
My husband.
My sister.
That moment never left me.
The way my husband looked at me. The way my sister started crying. The excuses. The apologies. The promises that meant nothing.
I had walked away from both of them.
I filed for divorce. I changed my number. I moved to another city. I erased every photograph, every memory, every reminder that they existed.
And when people asked about my sister, I always said the same thing.
“She died to me a long time ago.”
I thought those words would make the pain disappear.

The woman on the phone cleared her throat.
“I’m sorry to contact you like this, but Elena left something for you before she died.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Something for me? After fifteen years?”
There was a pause.
“Yes.”
“What?”
“A letter.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“I don’t want it.”
“I think you need to read it.”
Those words annoyed me more than anything.

“I said no.”
The woman’s voice softened.
“She wrote your name on the envelope. She said if you refused, I should tell you one thing.”
I stayed silent.
“She said, ‘Tell my sister the truth about what happened that night.’”
My heart stopped.

“It’s already on its way.”
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
At 2:13 in the morning, someone knocked on my door.

I sat down.

She wiped her tears.
“And I thought maybe you were happier without me.”
I shook my head.
“No…”
The word came out quietly, even though nobody was there.
Elena continued.
“I know what I did was wrong. I made a mistake that hurt you. I will carry that guilt forever.”
She took a deep breath.
“But please don’t spend the rest of your life carrying anger because of my mistake.”
Then she said the words that broke whatever wall I had built around my heart.
“Your sister didn’t die fifteen years ago. She died the day you stopped letting her love you.”
I cried.
Not the quiet tears I had shed when I was angry.
These were the tears of someone who had finally understood how much time had been lost.
The next morning, I went to the cemetery.
For fifteen years, I had refused to visit my sister.
I stood in front of her grave holding flowers.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
The wind moved through the trees.
