The same man appeared in almost every one.
Sometimes he was standing beside Ethan.
Sometimes he was watching him from across a street.
And in one photograph, he was standing outside our house.
My house.
Taken from across the road.
My stomach dropped.
“When was this taken?”
Ethan finally spoke.
“Three months ago.”
I looked at him.
“Three months ago?”
He nodded.
“That man was watching us?”
“No.”
His voice was barely audible.
“He was watching me.”
The baby stirred in my arms.
I instinctively pulled the blanket tighter around the tiny body.
“Ethan, start explaining.”
He looked toward the locked front door.
Then toward the windows.
Only after he was certain we were alone did he speak.
“Dad didn’t throw me out because he wanted me to become a man.”
My heart stopped.
“What are you saying?”
Ethan swallowed.
“He threw me out because he knew I had found something.”
“What did you find?”
He reached into the suitcase again.
This time he pulled out a thick brown envelope.
It was sealed with red tape.
My name was written across the front.
MOM.
I stared at it.
“Why is my name on that?”
“Because I wanted you to know the truth.”
“Then tell me.”
“I tried.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Remember the night before Dad kicked me out?”
I searched my memory.
Ethan had been unusually quiet that evening.
Richard had been angry about something, although I had never understood why.
“You came home late,” I whispered.
Ethan nodded.
“And Dad was waiting for you.”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
Ethan looked down.
“I had taken something from his office.”
A chill ran through me.
“What?”
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
Then another.
Then several more.

Dates.
Addresses.
I didn’t understand any of it.
Until I saw Richard’s signature.
My hands began to shake.
“No.”
Ethan watched my face.
“Mom…”
“No.”
I pushed the papers back toward him.
“This doesn’t prove anything.”
“It proves enough.”
“Your father has business accounts. Investments. He has always handled the finances.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you showing me this?”
“Because these aren’t business accounts.”
Silence filled the room.
The baby began to whimper softly.
I rocked him instinctively.
Ethan stared at the floor.
“Dad has been sending money to someone for years.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then how can you be sure?”
“Because I followed the payments.”
He looked at me.
“And every time the money was sent, someone disappeared.”
My breath caught.
“What do you mean, disappeared?”
Ethan reached into the suitcase again.
This time he pulled out a small black notebook.
He opened it to a page covered in handwriting.
Names.
Dates.
Locations.
At least twenty of them.
Some had red marks beside their names.
Others had question marks.
One name had been circled three times.
I leaned closer.
Then I saw it.
My own name.
My hands went numb.
“Why is my name here?”
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at the newborn.
Then at me.
“Because you’re next.”
The words barely registered.
“What?”
“You’re next, Mom.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“Dad knows I came here.”
“How?”
“Because he knew where I was before I reached the house.”
A terrible silence followed.
Then I heard something.
A car.
Slowly approaching outside.
Ethan’s face went white.
“Don’t move.”
I froze.
The car stopped.
Neither of us breathed.
A door opened outside.
Footsteps.
Someone was walking toward our front door.
Ethan grabbed the suitcase.
“Mom, listen to me.”
I looked at him.
“If that is Dad, don’t let him see the baby.”
“Why?”
His eyes filled with fear.
“Because that’s not his grandchild.”
He leaned closer.
“And that’s the reason he wants me dead.”
The footsteps stopped directly outside the door.
Three quiet knocks followed.

The baby suddenly began crying.
Ethan covered his mouth with one hand.
And then we heard Richard’s voice from the other side.
“Open the door.”
My blood turned to ice.
Ethan stared at me.
Richard knocked again.
“I’m home.”
Then his voice became strangely calm.
“I know Ethan is inside.”
I looked at my son.
He whispered one sentence.
“Mom, whatever you do…”
His eyes moved toward the suitcase.
“Don’t let Dad see what’s inside.”
I tightened my arms around the newborn.

“The basement.”
I grabbed the suitcase.

“Go.”
I hurried toward the basement door.

“I love you.”

“I know, Mom.”

I pushed it behind an old storage cabinet and hurried back upstairs.
Richard knocked a third time.

His eyes immediately moved past me.
“Where is he?”
I tried to sound confused.
“Who?”
“Ethan.”

“I haven’t seen Ethan.”
Richard stared at me.

“You were never a very good liar.”

“What are you talking about?”
“I know he came here.”

“A newborn?”
“You don’t understand.”
“No,” I said quietly. “I don’t.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.

Before I could answer, Ethan appeared at the end of the hallway.
“I’m right here.”
Richard turned.
For the first time, father and son looked directly at each other after a year apart.

“You should have stayed gone,” Richard said.
Ethan shook his head.
“I tried.”
Richard’s eyes narrowed.

Ethan stepped forward.
“You lied to Mom.”
Richard looked at me.
“About what?”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“Everything.”
Richard’s expression remained unreadable.
Then Ethan reached into his coat.
I expected another document.
Instead, he pulled out a small phone.
He pressed a button.
A recording began playing.
Richard’s own voice filled the room.
“Ethan can’t know about the accounts.”
My blood ran cold.
The recording continued.
Another man’s voice asked, “And the boy?”
Richard answered:
“He’ll leave tomorrow.”
I covered my mouth.
Ethan looked at me.
“That conversation happened the night before Dad kicked me out.”
Richard stepped toward him.
“Give me the phone.”
“No.”
“Ethan.”
“No.”
Richard’s voice became harder.
“You have no idea what you’ve involved yourself in.”
Ethan stared at him.
“I know you weren’t protecting the family.”
He glanced at me.
“You were protecting yourself.”
Richard said nothing.
Ethan continued.
“After you kicked me out, I went to the only person I thought might help me.”
“Who?”
“A man named Daniel.”
Richard’s face changed.
I saw it.
He knew that name.
“Daniel was your father’s accountant,” Ethan said.
Richard’s silence was answer enough.
“Daniel showed me the records.”
Ethan’s voice trembled.
“He told me Dad had been moving money through shell companies for years.”
Richard suddenly lunged toward him.
I screamed.
Ethan stepped back.
The phone fell to the floor.
Richard stared at him with pure rage.
“You should never have opened that file.”
Ethan whispered, “I know.”
Then he smiled sadly.

Richard froze.
“The police have them.”

As if summoned by his words, sirens sounded in the distance.

He turned toward the door.
But before he could reach it, several loud knocks shook the house.
“Police! Open the door!”
Richard stopped.
For the first time, I saw the man behind the reputation.
Not the disciplined husband.
Not the respectable father.
Just a frightened man who had finally run out of places to hide.
Two officers entered moments later.
Richard didn’t resist.
As they led him away, he looked at me.
“After everything I did for this family…”
I stared at him.
“No.”
My voice was strangely calm.
“Everything you did was for yourself.”
The door closed behind him.
And suddenly, the house was silent.
I turned toward Ethan.
He was standing beside the sofa, exhausted.
I walked toward him.
Then I stopped.

The duffel bag.
His red eyes.

“I failed you,” I whispered.
Ethan looked down.
“Yes.”

“I should have protected you.”
“Yes.”

My voice broke.
“I want to spend the rest of my life making sure you never feel alone again.”
Ethan stared at me.
Then, slowly, he stepped forward.
He hugged me.

Before his death, Daniel had entrusted the baby to Ethan because he believed Richard would come looking for the child.
The baby was the last living connection to evidence that could expose Richard’s crimes.
Ethan had spent a year moving from place to place, trying to keep the baby safe.
He hadn’t ignored my calls because he hated me.
He hadn’t disappeared because he didn’t love me.
He had stayed away because he believed Richard was watching.
And he had been right.
I looked down at the sleeping baby.
So small.
So innocent.
Then I looked at my son.
A year ago, Richard had told me that throwing Ethan out would make him strong.
But he had been wrong.
